Nine properties were nominated by members for the 2017 Town Pride Awards, The criteria by which we judged the nominees were:
• enhancing the built environment;
• using quality materials;
• aesthetically pleasing to the eye;
• restoring pride to the local community;
• contributing to the community amenity.
This year’s Town Pride Plaque and Certificate winner is:

Highly Commended
ARK Cliftonville Cultural Space, Albion Road, Cliftonville. This award has been given in recognition of preserving the cultural heritage of Cliftonville and contributing to the community amenity. The building was the former Margate Synagogue, which was saved from redevelopment by four local women and now houses the Cliftonville Cultural Space.
Blue Plaque and Certificate
Thanet District Council for their excellent renovation of the Nayland Rock Promenade Shelter. The award was given in recognition of preserving this important historical asset and making a major contribution to the coastal regeneration of Margate. The shelter was badly fire-damaged following an arson attack.

Highly Commended
Bright Start Nursery, Northdown Road, Cliftonville. This award is given in recognition of making a major contribution to the regeneration and community amenity of Cliftonville. The building in which the nursery is housed used to be the well-known Thornton Bobby store and has been extensively renovated.
Highly Commended
Margate's Great Wall of China. This award was in recognition of innovate, sensitive and eye-catching design, making an historical artistic contribution to Margate. The unusual and most attractive tiled mural, designed by Freeman of Margate Arnold Schwartzman OBE RDI, is located on Market Street in Margate's Old Town.
